Vieques Beach Map

Welcome to the Vieques Beach Map page. That's Vieques, Puerto Rico of course, which is an island you can only get to from another island. But it is worth the extra effort just for the beaches alone! Note that the info we provide is ALL post-hurricane-María - the pictures & descriptions are real, all taken since early 2018 so nobody gets deceived by old, pre-storm pictures. Vieques beaches are all-natural and things literally change with the winds and the tides, so we update the individual beach pages as we re-visit them. We also will add more beaches when they are open to the public.

The map below is clickable and zoomable, and below that you can filter by various beach attributes. We hope you enjoy!

July ’19 Updates:

  • First of all, we put in all the new numbers at La Chiva and La Plata.
    • The Vieques National Wildlife Refuge renumbered all of the numbered beach access points by removing what were previously labeled #’s 1 & 2. This then rippled throughout the list.
    • The original #1 is now called Pirate’s Cove (people have long known it as this)
    • The original #2 is now called Punta Galindez (in spite of the brown sign that says Galinde, and the Google map errors that say Galintez)
  • Caracas and Playuela continue with partial closures (closed until 2pm each weekday only) through July 26.
  • Now the biggest change to the beach directory is that we have separated the beach map & directory (now at viequesbeachmap.com) from our blog site (kneedeepinit.com). The new website stands all on its own. We still own it and run it, but it’s a separate entity now.
    • With this change, we have dramatically improved the map.
    • It now provides map functionality for mobile users - this was not available before. Now, on any device, you can zoom the map in and out without limitations on screen size.
    • Below the map we have new features that allow for filtering and searching by various attributes that a beach may have, for example “Family Friendly”, or “Beachcombing”.
    • You can display results in a list or by tiles.
    • The old site will point to the new site, so the links should all still work. Please let us know if something is broken.

Notes about Vieques Beaches

Please Help Out!

When you hit the beach, please do your part to keep the beaches & island clean. The beaches don’t clean themselves, nor does the government clean them - real people like us clean them, sometimes in organized groups and sometimes we just do it when we visit the beach. If all you do is pick up your own trash we love it, but if you want to be a hero, pick up an extra bit as you leave, even if it is just a single plastic bag or a beer can. Thank you so much for your help! (PS. You can do this on any beach you visit, worldwide!)

Sea Turtles

If you need another reason to pick up trash, here's one: it harms our friendly & beautiful sea turtles! In Vieques, there are three major turtle species: Tinglar (Leatherback), Carey (Hawksbill), & Verde (Green), all wonderful in their own right. Nesting seasons run from March through September. So in addition to trash pickup, please stay clear of the nests, hatchlings, and nesting females, and fill in holes and sandcastles on the sand. The turtles thank you! For more information, you can visit one of our favorite groups in Vieques, Ticatove (say tee-kah-toe-vay).

Tides

Some of the northside beaches we have listed are "short". By that I mean there isn't a lot of sand between the water and the jungle. And that means that a high tide can cover much or all of the sandy part with water! So for those beaches, we use this tide-forecast site and if it's a high tide, or on its way to high tide, we simply choose another beach. A few examples of these "short" beaches are Starfish BeachAirport BeachCemetery Beach, and Sea Glass Beach.
