Experience the stunning vistas from Vieques’ tallest peak, Monte Pirata, standing at nearly 1,000 feet above sea level.
Monte Pirata is the highest peak on Vieques, standing at an impressive height of 988 feet. From the summit of Monte Pirata, visitors can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Caribbean Sea, lush greenery, and the picturesque coastline of Vieques. Hiking trails are being created to wind their way to the top of the peak, offering adventurers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the island’s natural beauty. The climb to the summit is considered moderate in difficulty if you stay on the paved road. It is very steep and you will most likely need to take breaks, bring water and snacks! Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning vistas of the island and may encounter diverse wildlife such as iguanas, birds, and butterflies. The best time to hike to the peak of Monte Pirata is early morning or late afternoon to witness the sunrise or sunset over the island. While there are no guided tours available for hiking to Monte Pirata, visitors can explore the trails on their own and take in the awe-inspiring views at their own pace.

For a more challenging hike you can take the Difficult trail on your left further up the mountain climb. This trail is an expert level trail and caution should be taken.

There are two parking lots, sometimes the gates are all open and you can drive to the second lot. Other times you will need to park at the first gate and make the extra trek up the paved road to get to the first of two platforms.
